Here's a review I really wrote:
If I was to describe Will Haven`s new record, The Hierophant, in a couple of words, they`d be... fucking wicked. Sacramento, California`s Will Haven have often been described as metal-core pioneers. To me, they`ve been the metal-core pioneer's best kept secret. My best description would be Neurosis meets Sick of it All. Neurosis for those progressive, dark, evil, deep sonics and Sick of it All for that aggressive, groove driven approach. As for doubts about new vocalist Jeff Jaworski, he fills the role and then some. In my opinion, his style is a cross between former vocalist Grady Avenell and Kurt Brecht from DRI. With a return in stride, their new album The Hierophant, finally gives frustrated fans what they deserve from the ole Will Haven, an album that captures what they are all about.
Highly recommended.
Produced by Shaun Lopez and Chino Moreno, The Hierophant will be in stores June 19th.

this is a scrapped review I did for a zine that has been shelved, its only a rough draft so apologies for the rambling... ---------------------------------- my expectations were extremely high and somehow they far exceeded them. this seems to mine from the source as it were... I can hear elements of Bloodlet's "Seraphim Fall" album, Breach, Neurosis.. and the time when Revelation actually put out great records and didn't tragically chase whatever trend was cool last month, a time when Himsa was a weirdo, abstract metal band and Hardcore wasn't about hairspray. bands dont make albums like this anymore.. they did in the early 90's, albums without a single skippable track, albums that make you want to get out of bed in the morning just so you can listen to them.
simultaneously taking the signature WHVH elements into completely new sonic territory its unmistakeably Will Haven and nothing else, I always thought Eric Stenman captured all the sonic peculiarities of Jeff Irwins always slightly left of centre playing : harmonic, weird dissonance that has often left reviewers writing that Will Haven contains multiple guitarists (I've noticed that drummers that take up the guitar often seem to be interesting, innovative players), I was worried that the sound would be lost under different producers but the Lopez/Moreno production takes everything up several notches... everything is MORE, the Will Haven songwriting dynamics are more imaginative and the band has absolute mastery over the harmonics, dissonance.. everything is honed to perfection yet remains raw and completely in the red, Its a ballsy record.. in the past the WHVN palette of sound was the bands tool... this time it's the bands bitch.
compared to the older albums (which out of the 4-5 thousand in my collection remain the most often played) this is in a new realm - whereas with the first 3 full lengths you could possibly suggest a case of "motorhead syndrome" in that however off-kilter and abstract the material on the album, you know what to expect from a WHVN record - in comparison (and with no disrespect to those great albums) this is Will Haven in complete mastery of their art with none of the boundarys holding them back. Jeff Jaworski being the only person who could EVER dream of stepping into Grady's shoes does a great job as frontman, smart and with an encylopedic knowledge of any hardcore than means a shit - the vocals remain intelligent, the lyrics abstract yet dipping into the same cryptic word stew Grady would often leave for the listener to draw their own conclusions from - the band have always been smarter than your average metal-hardcore barking band with meathead singer or contrived trust-fund emo-hardcore nonsense, Will Haven would be Bukowski to ferret records roster's Carrot Top. Will Haven have always credited the listener with the intelligence to draw their own conclusions from the lyrics rather than force-feed them a manifesto of contrived, melodramatic hardcore cliche nonsense, a fact not lost on the smarter fans.
A couple of things will truly suck about this album coming out, the first being every cliche'd hardcore kid who has yet to leave comfort of their family home and understands very little of the complexities of real life (the terror of which usually leads to being sXe 'til 21) will be yelling "No Grady, No Care" and writing the band off as sell outs for wanting to keep going.. its a shame because for the 2 years or so that these kids are "into" hardcore they generally just tire anyone who has a genuine passion for music. just remember that its just a matter of time before they get their office jobs and listen to nothing heavier than John Maher for the rest of their lives, these kids aren't music fans.. they are over pampered cunts and are to be treated as such. this small thing called "progression" is fairly important in life as you may have noticed on the road from kindergarten to College.
the second sucky thing is that influential bands rarely get the support and credit they deserve during their existence, the bands that have the most distinctive sounds, the most undiluted manifestations of their art... rarely seem to get the support so painfully needed for them to keep going, for every person that saw the velvet underground its said that a band sprung up... now the amount of times I've seen WHVN as a reference point for a certain sound or listed as a major influence for a band must run into the thousands. kids.. this is the real deal, these guys are honest, no bullshit, cliche free heavy IMPORTANT music. no gimmicks, no bullshit - buy the album, catch a show - support them because bands like this aren't around forever and once they are gone... thats when 50 "my chemical romance"s spring up.
do the right thing and buy this album as soon as possible, I give this my highest recommendation.
10/10

And I love the respect that the band themselves give to their fans. Kinda makes it more worth sticking with them.
Can't wait to see this stuff live now!

Exactly mattrsj! That is the main reason why I still love WHVN, their honesty and appreciation of the fans is something that a lot of bands could learn from
