...or at least stop playing for awhile. So, I saw Deftones in Chico, CA last November, just after the release of Saturday Night Wrist. BTW, Will Haven opened the show with Grady on vocals . Anyways, Deftones tore it up! They played the usual Deftones classics as well as songs I haven't heard live. (Elite, Passenger, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, etc) So I saw Deftones earlier thiis month at the Warfield and they pretty much sucked ass. I mean they were having fun and stuff but, the music was sloppy and the band just seemed like the were going through the motions. I don't blame them though. They've been touring almost non-stop for months now. Ok, I guess what I am trying to say is that some of the songs really sounded dated. I love MoS and Bored but, BQaD and 7 words felt sooooo 90s. Has anyone else seen the Deftones recently and felt the same thing?

not as such, although when i saw them in tilburg in march i felt kinda removed and not quite into it, but that may have been cause i had just been blown away by will haven.....
the last time i saw them was in april and i was right at the back of the room, but it was a good set, with the exeption of BtS, which i just don't really like. i think i haven't really seen them enough times to have got tired of any of the songs.
it would be cool if they played more off s/t - they completely ignored it in london, which was a shame.

Yeah, Back 2 School is awful. I don't know why they even wrote that thing. It's like a mock rap metal song.
The funny thing is, I really like Pink Maggott. Pink Maggott is one of the better songs off of White Pony. They should play that live instead of Back 2 School.
I also really like some of the songs from the self-titled. Battle-Axe is one of the best songs they've written. Bloody Cape is killer... Death Blow... Minerva, etc.
I guess if I was to create a Deftones setlist, it would consist of two songs for Adrenline (Bored, Engine #9), two songs from Around the Fur (MoS, ATF), and the rest be White Pony and up. The old material just feels dated to me. I still love the classice Deftones records but live, I want new stuff.

I guess there's always this conflict between pleasing the people who just want all the old stuff, and then actually playing a more varied set, or even more new stuff as they haven't played it so much so it's still fresh.
i can't even imagine what it must be like to play for so many years and to play the same songs so many times.... there must be times when it is really hard to keep a song going. but those songs are so often the ones people really want to hear.
you can't please all the people all the time.....and all that...

Oh totally...
people would complain if they didn't play the old stuff. especially the around the fur stuff. The old material is much more popular than the newer stuff--- poll wise.
I guess that's just the way I am. Like if WH started to tour the US (or just play some more Cali shows) I'd want to hear more of the new record than the old classic stuff. Ok, well maybe 50/50. hehe

Well, I don't know if they shouldn't play some songs anymore, but a more varied set is good idea. I mean, I love al their songs (some more than others) and some songs just never get played live. I've seen the Deftones quite a few times over the years and indeed, maybe some songs that are constantly in the set could be bumped for lesser played songs for awhile.

I agree with everything said above.
When I saw them in March they were outstanding. They played everything I wanted them to hear (including Passenger which I don't think I'd ever seen them do live). It was a good 90 minutes including two encores - win!
I wish people wouldn't bash the S/T. I was saying to my mate last night that there are some cracking songs on it. Needles and Pins when played loud is ace and yeah, Minerva, Bloody Cape, Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event (which would be amazing as stage entrance music).
I've only ever seen them do one bad show in the 15 or so times I've seen them and that was at a festival so it can be allowed!

Indeed, the S/T is a solid record. Hexagram, Needles & Pins, Minerva, When Girls Telephone Boys, Anniversary Of An Uninteresting Event, Moana...solid songs. And indeed, Anniversary Of An Uninteresting Event would be a great stage entrence music or even setopener.
